Borderline Assault... and battery

Wet Spot's Internet connection crashed so I wasn't able to post anything after the bout. Here's a recap of the action:

It isn't every day two of the best teams in the country play each other, but this is exactly what happened at the Borderline Assault on Saturday night. The Dairyland Dolls took a short trip up I-94 to visit the Minnesota Rollergirls in the last of three bouts between the teams in the span of just 2 months. MNRG was looking for revenge after two tough losses and hoped the third time was the charm against their neighbors. The Dairyland Dolls wanted to slam the door shut to end their interleague season.

Right from the first jam it was clear there would be no quarter given as bone-crushing hits by both teams sent bodies across the track. From the beginning their jammers did their best to knock the Dairyland Dolls' jammers out before reaching the pack, but it wasn't enough. The Dairyland Dolls jumped out to an early lead with Jenny Knoxville and Mouse racking up points. The Minnesota Rollergirls answered back with strong jams by Desi Cration to close the gap. At the end of the first period, the Dairyland Dolls had a 37-27 lead.

The action intensified in the second period, with harder hits and a faster pace. Every time the Dairyland Dolls tried to extend their lead, the Minnesota Rollergirls tightened up the score. It was a see-saw battle and, even though the Dolls never lost the lead, they weren't able to build a decicive advantage. The crowd went wild from the excitement of it all. Halfway through the period, Jewels of Denile had a malfunction with her skates while jamming and was out for quite a few jams trying to get them fixed. A few jams later, Lizzy the Axe got called out on a penalty while jamming with only four points separating the teams. Mouse was able to rack up eight points and the home team was never got within 10 points again.

The third period saw both teams going all out, knowing that bragging rights for the next year were on the line. Solid hits by Darling Nikki, Back Doris and Jewels combined with strategic jams by HackSAW, Jenny Knoxville and Mouse gave the Dairyland Dolls a 20 point lead early in the period. A never-say-die attitude and stellar skating by Rebel Stella and Buffy the Vampire Skater showed everyone what the Minnesota Rollergirls were all about. Desi Cration was their star in the first two periods, but her asthma kept her out for most of the third period. Without their high-scoring star, the Minnesota Rollergirls just didn't have enough firepower to close the gap. In the end, dreams of revenge came crashing down and the Dairyland Dolls skated off with a 96-80 victory.

The Little Apple

Most of us came up on Friday night for the Borderline Assault bout against the Minnesota Rollergirls. For those of you stuck at home, Go to the B2 Networks website. It's only $9 and the proceeds go to Madison's Girl Neighborhood Power. You can sign up now and log in 10 minutes before the bout starts (7:30pm)

After arriving at Wet Spot's house, a few of us went to a party at CleoSPLATra's house. On the way we heard about the "Basement Boxing" she has at her house. If you want to fight (with gloves and headgear) you weigh in, get your picture taken and then challenge someone around the same size. Sure enough, when we got there people were already signing up on the fight board. Going down the basement they had a carpeted area with foam padding taped up along the wall. They had all the gear including mouthguards. After seeing a couple of matches, our very own Reverend Riot took the ring. He came out swinging and after a flurry of punches between them, he managed to knock the other guy down. Unfortunately, during the exchange his nose got cut open and started bleeding. Even though he was just getting warmed up they had to call the fight. He looks a lot meaner with a bandaid across his nose. Should be just enough to intimidate the other refs tonight.

On Saturday morning, everyone got together for breakfast at the Herkimer. It was great to see the Minnesota skaters again. Even though this will be our third bout against them in 2 months, the two leagues have friendships that go back to the early days of derby. No matter what happens tonight, the afterparty will be a festive occasion.

More to come later.

Third time's the charm

After slipping and sliding to a substantial victory at the Madison
Mallard's Baseball field this summer, and a massacre in Seattle at the
Bumberbout tournament, the Dairyland Dolls are headed up to St. Paul,
MN to show the Minnesota RollerGirls who's boss one more time.
Saturday, Oct 21 at the Roy Wilkins Arena - tickets are available HERE.
