Let the Havoc Begin!

The Dairyland Dolls rolled into Columbus Thursday, ready to prove they are the best in the east at Heartland Havoc, the eastern regional Women’s Flat Track Roller Derby tournament.

The stakes are high. Twelve teams compete here for four slots at the national championships in Austin the last weekend in September.

The action started Friday afternoon with a match-up between Chicago’s Windy City Rollers and the Atlanta Rollergirls. Windy City won 106 to 77 (Top-seeded Madison received a bye in the first round of competition.)

“Atlanta ran Windy City ragged in a great bout,” said Dairyland Dolls captain Crackerjack. “I’m happy to know that the Chicago girls will be real tired when we meet up with them tomorrow.”

The Dolls face off against Chicago in the first bout of the day Saturday.

In the second bout, Detroit turned around a 20-point deficit in the third 20-minute period. Regular play ended with a 95-95 tie. In the two-minute tie-breaker period, Detroit pulled ahead to win 103 to 99.

The Grand Raggidy Roller Girls (Michigan), a recently formed, but up-and-coming league, got overwhelmed by the more experienced New York Gotham Girls and lost 206 to 47. But Grand Rapids is a league to watch. They fought hard, never gave up and showed they have great potential for the seasons to come.

In one more bout to come tonight, host league Ohio takes on Providence. Watch for the outcome next time we find an unprotected wireless server.
