Dairyland Dolls fall to Chicago

In a stunning upset, Madison’s Dairyland Dolls lost to the Windy City Rollers in their round two game. That brought down the curtain on their inter-league season. They won’t be competing in the National Championships in Austin in September. The final score: Windy City, 94; Dolls, 63.

The DDs came into the tournament ranked number one. Chicago was ranked number 7. But something has been going on south of the state line, and this was a whole new Windy City Team. With a new rock-solid defensive strategy, Chicago dominated the front of the pack on jam after jam. The Dolls blockers tried, but failed to break up the formation. Dolls jammers could not penetrate. Frustration lead to multiple penalties. Windy City did the most damage in jams when the Dolls jammer was cooling her wheels on the bench.

Nevertheless, the Dolls played hard and well, with standout performances by skaters who taught the victorious Chicago girls a lot of the moves they used to defeat the Dolls this afternoon.

The Dolls lost it in period two. At the beginning of that period, Chicago trailed by one point, 32 to 31. But in period 2, the Dolls scored only seven points, while Chicago scored 31. Madison continued to lag by about 30 points until the final whistle.

The Dolls, stunned and sad, hugged each other, fans, and Windy City Roller skaters. Then they headed off to the showers to get pretty, anticipating spending the rest of the weekend watching the remaining competitors and going to the after parties.

“I want a waffle with ice cream,” yelled one Doll who’s been following training rules. “And a beer,” cried out another.

But Dolly Pardon Me drifted off, musing, “I just wanted to skate more than once.”

Minnesota v Detroit.

In the second upset game of the afternoon, Detroit overpowered the Minnesota Roller Girls. Minnesota has a reputation for taking a lot of penalties, and that was the case again today. Detroit, one of the newer teams in the east, displayed smooth moves, great strategy and nimble skating, ending the afternoon with a surprise 99 to 77 victory.

Windy City set the bar in the game against Madison. Now all the lower ranked teams know they, too, have a chance to take all the marbles.
