Cinderella Wind City

From seemingly out of nowhere, the Windy City Rollergirls have advanced to the WFTDA eastern finals with a 104-55 victory over Raleigh’s Carolina Rollergirls. Playing evenly for the first period, Windy City turned up their stellar defense to hold Carolina scoreless for twelve-minute stretches in both of the last two periods. Carolina felt Madison’s pain and frustration at not being able to get their jammers through, while Windy City matched their defense with aggressive jamming.

Upsets continue three for three.

In a contest between two closely seeded teams, the #4 Philly Liberty Bells and #5 Gotham Roller Girls, it was Gotham rolling away to a 136-81 victory. New York’s win marked the third upset of the day of a favored team. Although the bout was settled by the end of the second period, Philly never quit giving it their all. Suzy Hotrod lead the Gotham scoring barrage, while Mo Pain and Teflon Donna lead the Philadelpia scorers.

Carolina bucks the trend.

The Carolina Rollergirl Allstars, the tournament’s number three seed, safely avoided the fate of the other top seeds and advanced to a semi-final bout against Windy City with a 96-5 victory over Providence’s Rhode Island Riveters. The teams had met twice before, with Carolina the winner both times. While the bout started slowly, Carolina found it’s stride half way through the first period, and never looked back. Like Windy City, their defense was solid, and their jammers fast.

Princess America shined for Carolina as she skated nearly every other jam. With victory in hand, her smile matched her play as she blew kisses to the many Carolina fans.

Providence proved an able opponent for Carolina, continuing the tournament’s revelation that the quality of play has risen all around. DaSilva Bullet, whose toughness after a hard hit on Friday gained everyone’s respect, proved she was a scorer as well by consistently capturing the lead and nailing two grand slams against the tough Carolina defense.

In a spontaneous display of energy and sisterhood, DJ Moxy had the girls whose day was done dancing in the bleachers and on the floor during the intermissions. The girls had to let the game interrupt the dance party, which they soon moved downtown.
