Playing evenly for the first period, Windy City turned up their stellar defense to hold Carolina scoreless for twelve-minute stretches in both of the last two periods. Carolina felt Madison’s pain and frustration at not being able to get their jammers through, while Windy City matched their defense with aggressive jamming.

MORE COVERAGE FROM SATURDAY'S ACTION

Upsets continue three for three.

In a contest between two closely seeded teams, the #4 Philly Liberty Bells and #5 Gotham Roller Girls, it was Gotham rolling away to a 136-81 victory. New York’s win marked the third upset of the day of a favored team. Although the bout was settled by the end of the second period, Philly never quit giving it their all. Suzy Hotrod lead the Gotham scoring barrage, while Mo Pain and Teflon Donna lead the Philadelpia scorers.

Carolina bucks the trend.

The Carolina Rollergirl Allstars, the tournament’s number three seed, safely avoided the fate of the other top seeds and advanced to a semi-final bout against Windy City with a 96-5 victory over Providence’s Rhode Island Riveters. The teams had met twice before, with Carolina the winner both times. While the bout started slowly, Carolina found it’s stride half way through the first period, and never looked back. Like Windy City, their defense was solid, and their jammers fast.
More Coverage from Saturday's action

Princess America shined for Carolina as she skated nearly every other jam. With victory in hand, her smile matched her play as she blew kisses to the many Carolina fans.

Providence proved an able opponent for Carolina, continuing the tournament’s revelation that the quality of play has risen all around. DaSilva Bullet, whose toughness after a hard hit on Friday gained everyone’s respect, proved she was a scorer as well by consistently capturing the lead and nailing two grand slams against the tough Carolina defense.

In a spontaneous display of energy and sisterhood, DJ Moxy had the girls whose day was done dancing in the bleachers and on the floor during the intermissions. The girls had to let the game interrupt the dance party, which they soon moved downtown.

It's still sinking in...

The Heartland Havoc final four will go to Finals in Austin. That brought down the curtain on their inter-league season. They won’t be competing in the National Championships in Austin in September. The final score: Windy City, 94; Dolls, 63.

The DDs came into the tournament ranked number one. Chicago was ranked number 7. But something has been going on south of the state line, and this was a whole new Windy City Team. With a new rock-solid defensive strategy, Chicago dominated the front of the pack on jam after jam. The Dolls blockers tried, but failed to break up the formation. Dolls jammers could not penetrate. Frustration lead to multiple penalties. Windy City did the most damage in jams when the Dolls jammer was cooling her wheels on the bench.

Nevertheless, the Dolls played hard and well, with standout performances by skaters who taught the victorious Chicago girls a lot of the moves they used to defeat the Dolls this afternoon.

The Dolls lost it in period two. At the beginning of that period, Chicago trailed by one point, 32 to 31. But in period 2, the Dolls scored only seven points, while Chicago scored 31. Madison continued to lag by about 30 points until the final whistle.

The Dolls, stunned and sad, hugged each other, fans, and Windy City Roller skaters. Then they headed off to the showers to get pretty, anticipating spending the rest of the weekend watching the remaining competitors and going to the after parties.

“I want a waffle with ice cream,” yelled one Doll who’s been following training rules. “And a beer,” cried out another.

But Dolly Pardon Me drifted off, musing, “I just wanted to skate more than once.”

Minnesota v Detroit.

In the second upset game of the afternoon, Detroit overpowered the Minnesota Roller Girls. Minnesota has a reputation for taking a lot of penalties, and that was the case again today. Detroit, one of the newer teams in the east, displayed smooth moves, great strategy and nimble skating, ending the afternoon with a surprise 99 to 77 victory.

Windy City set the bar in the game against Madison. Now all the lower ranked teams know they, too, have a chance to take all the marbles.

Yahoo!!

The Dairyland Dolls take the track against Windy City in just 50 minutes. Both teams played hard, and the final score of 126 to 95 doesn’t reflect how closely matched these teams were. An enthusiastic band of Ohio fans came out for what everyone in Columbus knew could be bottom-seeded Ohio’s only appearance at this tournament. The action – intense. The penalties – frequent and controversial. The time had by all – very good.

Saturday, your DDs face the Windy City Rollers at 1 p.m. The Dolls last played Chicago at the first Dust Devil. That bout was a shut out – Windy City did not score a single point. But the Chicago team has learned a thing or two since then, and this bout could be a heart-stopper.

Other match-ups for Round Two:

Providence v. Twelve teams compete here for four slots at the national championships in Austin the last weekend in September.

The action started Friday afternoon with a match-up between Chicago’s Windy City Rollers and the Atlanta Rollergirls. Windy City won 106 to 77 (Top-seeded Madison received a bye in the first round of competition.)

“Atlanta ran Windy City ragged in a great bout,” said Dairyland Dolls captain Crackerjack. “I’m happy to know that the Chicago girls will be real tired when we meet up with them tomorrow.”

The Dolls face off against Chicago in the first bout of the day Saturday.

In the second bout, Detroit turned around a 20-point deficit in the third 20-minute period. Regular play ended with a 95-95 tie. In the two-minute tie-breaker period, Detroit pulled ahead to win 103 to 99.

The Grand Raggidy Roller Girls (Michigan), a recently formed, but up-and-coming league, got overwhelmed by the more experienced New York Gotham Girls and lost 206 to 47. But Grand Rapids is a league to watch. They fought hard, never gave up and showed they have great potential for the seasons to come.

In one more bout to come tonight, host league Ohio takes on Providence. border="0">

That's right, ladies, the Mad Rollin' Dolls are recruiting. We need a few good women to join up and flesh out our ranks. We need a new crop of rookies. We need a few dedicated, strong, and hardworking beauties and we're looking at you.

You've got what it takes to gear up and train. Trust us, we know it when we see it. Your muscles will be toned and tortured by hours of hard, fast practice. You'll love every minute of it. You'll sweat like you've never sweat before. You'll curse under your breath, and then dig deep and skate faster. You'll be bruised and sore, and you'll come back again the next day for more. You'll scrimmage against Dolls who will pull no punches, and you'll get knocked to the ground. You'll learn how to get up, and you'll get up every. single. time.

And in the end, you may just be drafted onto one of the four finest teams in the whole wide world, and you'll be able to say, "I am a Mad Rollin' Doll."

Think your skating's not quite up to par? Get your skate legs back, and get to know the ladies of our league. MRD is hosting a series of open skates to expose derby girl wannabes to Derby 101 and get a good look at them before tryouts. $5 with skate rental, $3 without; recruits may bring emotional support but no slack-jawed rubberneckers allowed. Show up at Fast Forward on June 24 at 10:00 AM, July 15 at 10:00 AM, and July 18 at 4:00 PM. Really want to sweat? Come to skater conditioning practice on July 10 at 6:00 PM.
Reservoir Dolls and Quad Squad Lock Up Top Seeds for Roller Derby Playoffs

The Mad Rollin’ Dolls rocked the rink in front of another sell-out crowd in a pair of match-ups crammed with astonishing speed and heart-stopping pile-ups. With the last whistles, the Reservoir Dolls and Quad Squad will move into the March 31 semi-finals ranked one and two. The pumped-up Vixens challenged the powerhouse Res Dolls – a bout that goes into the books as the best of the season. From the first jam, when OctoPushy (VV) flew over the inside lights and took out a ref, to the very last, when jammers Mouse (RD), and Harlot Bronte (VV) took each other out at turn four, the Vixens never let up. Both teams formed tight defensive packs and jammers had to fight for every point in this high scoring game.

The Unholy Rollers, yearning for blood, just couldn’t get their teeth into the Quad Squad. The vampire girls claimed six talented first-year skaters this season and the more experienced 2006 champion Quad Squad simply overpowered them. It’s a rebuilding year for the Unholies, who can expect Mauly Tov and Mack the Knife to emerge as major threats next season.

At halftime, hula-hoops and the Unholies came out tops. Revolver, hoop dancers from Chicago, defied gravity and kept the hoops twirling to the delight of the crowd. Also at the half, team mascots competed in the second annual Mascot Olympics and the Unholy Roller mascots took serious revenge for their team on the other teams’ mascots.

The bout was dedicated to Chris “ROM Zombie” Wallendal, MRD statistician, super fan and super friend.

This bout rounded out the regular season standings; the teams are ready to move into the playoffs with the Reservoir Dolls ranked #1, Quad Squad #2, Vaudeville Vixens #3 and Unholy Rollers #4. On March 31, the playoffs begin, with the Quad Squad vs. Vaudeville Vixens, and the Reservoir Dolls vs. Unholy Rollers.

Get your tickets early for the bouts that will determine who carries the Mad Rollin’ Dolls Championship Trophy Leg for the next year. All games are Saturday nights at 7pm at Fast Forward Skate Center. Tickets will be available at the usual outlets and at www.madrollindolls.com.

Scores:
Reservoir Dolls – 124; Vaudeville Vixens – 101
Quad Squad – 106; Unholy Rollers – 36

Zombie Prom

Vixens and Vampires Vanquished in St. Valentine's Day Massacre

The Mad Rollin' Dolls intergalactic domination force (Quad Squad), and crime syndicate (Reservoir Dolls) were packing heat on a cold night at Fast Forward Skate Center on Saturday, Feb. 3. With lasers set on stun and machine guns blasting, they wiped out their challengers, the Vaudeville Vixens and Unholy Rollers.

The 2006 Champion Quad Squad defense dominated the pack, opening wormholes to propel their jammers into the lead and creating black holes for Vixen jammers. Quad jammers Thunder Kitten and Jenny Knoxville flew at warp speed through the pack time and again. The Vixens, led by stellar performances by Dolly Pardon Me, Darling Nikki and up-and-comer OctoPushy, put up a valiant fight and had a fantastic second period, but ended the battle with the loss.

With team captain and spark plug Jewels of DeNile sidelined with a bum knee, the Unholy Rollers were wiped out by the Reservoir Dolls. The Unholies, in a rebuilding year, blocked hard and often, keeping the referees busy sorting out the fair blocks from the illegal ones. The Reservoir Dolls' seamless defensive strategies and forceful whips turned the pack into Swiss cheese for the Mouse and Carry A. HackSAW. Despite great skating by jammers BackDoris and Wildberry Punch, the Unholy Rollers just could not get a break.

Season 3, Bout 2

Borderline Assault... and battery

Wet Spot's Internet connection crashed so I wasn't able to post anything after the bout. Here's a recap of the action:

It isn't every day two of the best teams in the country play each other, but this is exactly what happened at the Borderline Assault on Saturday night. The Dairyland Dolls took a short trip up I-94 to visit the Minnesota Rollergirls in the last of three bouts between the teams in the span of just 2 months. MNRG was looking for revenge after two tough losses and hoped the third time was the charm against their neighbors. The Dairyland Dolls wanted to slam the door shut to end their interleague season.

Right from the first jam it was clear there would be no quarter given as bone-crushing hits by both teams sent bodies across the track. From the beginning their jammers did their best to knock the Dairyland Dolls' jammers out before reaching the pack, but it wasn't enough. The Dairyland Dolls jumped out to an early lead with Jenny Knoxville and Mouse racking up points. The Minnesota Rollergirls answered back with strong jams by Desi Cration to close the gap. At the end of the first period, the Dairyland Dolls had a 37-27 lead.

The action intensified in the second period, with harder hits and a faster pace. Every time the Dairyland Dolls tried to extend their lead, the Minnesota Rollergirls tightened up the score. It was a see-saw battle and, even though the Dolls never lost the lead, they weren't able to build a decicive advantage. The crowd went wild from the excitement of it all. Halfway through the period, Jewels of Denile had a malfunction with her skates while jamming and was out for quite a few jams trying to get them fixed. A few jams later, Lizzy the Axe got called out on a penalty while jamming with only four points separating the teams. Mouse was able to rack up eight points and the home team was never got within 10 points again.

The third period saw both teams going all out, knowing that bragging rights for the next year were on the line. Solid hits by Darling Nikki, Back Doris and Jewels combined with strategic jams by HackSAW, Jenny Knoxville and Mouse gave the Dairyland Dolls a 20 point lead early in the period. A never-say-die attitude and stellar skating by Rebel Stella and Buffy the Vampire Skater showed everyone what the Minnesota Rollergirls were all about. Desi Cration was their star in the first two periods, but her asthma kept her out for most of the third period. Without their high-scoring star, the Minnesota Rollergirls just didn't have enough firepower to close the gap. In the end, dreams of revenge came crashing down and the Dairyland Dolls skated off with a 96-80 victory.

The Little Apple

Most of us came up on Friday night for the Borderline Assault bout against the Minnesota Rollergirls. For those of you stuck at home, Go to the B2 Networks website. It's only $9 and the proceeds go to Madison's Girl Neighborhood Power. You can sign up now and log in 10 minutes before the bout starts (7:30pm)

After arriving at Wet Spot's house, a few of us went to a party at CleoSPLATra's house. On the way we heard about the "Basement Boxing" she has at her house. If you want to fight (with gloves and headgear) you weigh in, get your picture taken and then challenge someone around the same size. Sure enough, when we got there people were already signing up on the fight board. Going down the basement they had a carpeted area with foam padding taped up along the wall. They had all the gear including mouthguards. After seeing a couple of matches, our very own Reverend Riot took the ring. He came out swinging and after a flurry of punches between them, he managed to knock the other guy down. Unfortunately, during the exchange his nose got cut open and started bleeding. Even though he was just getting warmed up they had to call the fight. He looks a lot meaner with a bandaid across his nose. Should be just enough to intimidate the other refs tonight.

On Saturday morning, everyone got together for breakfast at the Herkimer. It was great to see the Minnesota skaters again. Even though this will be our third bout against them in 2 months, the two leagues have friendships that go back to the early days of derby. The Texacutioners went into halftime with a solid lead, but the Rat City Rollergirls came on strong in the second period. The announcers had the crowd on their feet for the last jam and it was one of the most exciting moments of the day. Despite a deficit of 11 points with 2 minutes to go, the Rat City Rollergirls played like they meant it and almost pulled off the biggest upset in the history of flat track derby. In the end, the Texecutioners held on to win the Bumberbout Invitational Tournament 74-69.

The final standings:
1st place Texas
2nd Rat City
3rd Mad Rollin' Dolls
4th Minnesota

It's unfortunate Tucson and Arizona didn't make it to the tournament, but the results of this competition should shake things up a bit in the national rankings. Texas is obviously top dog and Tucson should remain a close second until someone knocks them off, but Rat City really impressed the derby crowd and look like a solid 3rd. Eventually the Dairyland Dolls will have a chance to put them to the test, but for now I would have to say we are pretty much even with Arizona to round out the top 5 in the country. Of course this is just my opinion, but having seen dozens of bouts from coast to coast, I feel pretty comfortable with this assessment of the derby landscape.

Grudge match final score!

Despite being two of the oldest flat track leagues in the country, the Dairyland Dolls and Minnesota Rollergirls have only faced each other once. Eight days ago they played the first baseball stadium bout in over 30 years, drawing over 1100 rain-soaked fans. It was a fun, entertaining bout – not at all like the battle fought today.

The first period of the Grudge Match was a hard-hitting affair, with the paramedics coming out twice. Tatum Tantrum was elbowed in the throat, taking her out of the game, but after the period she came up to let us know she was ok. The score was tight for the first part of the period, but monstrous hits by Scabs in two different jams rattled the cages of the Minnesota skaters. The first forced Jawbreaker to call off the jam early. A few jams later, after getting completely boxed in by Paine Mansfield and Princess Die, Rebel Stella got knocked out by Scabs. With the Dolls leading 40-26, Carrie A. HackSAW ran up the score while the Minnesota jammer, Lizzie the Axe, sat in the penalty box. At the end of the period, the Dairyland Dolls were comfortably in the lead 58-28.

The first period of the Championship bout saw a fired up crowd cheering for the hometown Rat City Rollergirls against the defending national champion Texecutioners. Hanging tough, the Rat City skaters were only down 39-24.

The second period of the Grudge Match wasn’t quite the caliber we saw in the first half. With a 30 point lead, the intensity turned to tension and tempers started to flare. There were a few extra hits and a lot more time spent in the penalty box for both teams. Occasionally it was hard to tell if there was a pack, since both sides skated short so often. One highlight was a 10 point jam by Mouse, stretching the lead to 70-30 early in the period. Jewels of Denile got in plenty of good hits, knocking Desicration on her ass at least once, much to the pleasure of the crowd. The time went by fast and the game ended with the Dairyland Dolls skating off with 3rd place in the tournament by a score of 96-50.

Stay tuned, since the Dairyland Dolls travel to Minnesota for a rematch October 21st!

I'm on my way back to the championship game. Hopefully I'll get another blog posted tonight, but no guarantees.

Pool 2 update

As expected, the final bout in pool 1 was no contest. The Texecutioners pounded the Kansas City Roller Warriors 62-16, putting them into the Championship bout later tonight and opening the door for the Dairyland Dolls to play the 3rd place Grudge Match.

The story in Pool 2 was the collision course between Rat City and Minnesota. Both teams blew past their competition, setting up a battle worthy of the venue. Unfortunately, as a certain Star Trek character once said, "having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting." Minnesota has a reputation for hard-hitting action, but Rat City took it all and gave it all back with a vengeance. Paramedics were called at least twice in the first 5 minutes of the bout, with both skaters able to walk over to the bench after some help. In the end, the home town crowd provided fuel to the fire as Rat City booked a spot in the Championship with a 46-24 victory. The Grudge Match will be just that, as Minnesota will play the Dairyland Dolls for the second time in 8 days.

Results of pool 2:
Bay Area 29 Minnesota 53
Carolina 27 Rat City 64
Minnesota 55 Carolina 35
Bay Area 13 Rat City 68
Bay Area 24 Carolina 30
Minnesota 24 Rat City 46

Special Note: Rat City was so far ahead in their bouts that their blockers started giving leg whips to their jammers. Instead of extending a hand to help them along, they offered a foot to whip them ahead. None of the announcers had ever seen that in a bout before.

More results later tonight if possible. No later than tomorrow morning.

Bumberbout update! pool 1

Bumberbout started with an old fashioned ass whoopin’ with the Texecutioners beating down the Boston Stranglers by a score of 56-13

The Dairlyland Dolls opened up their tournament play against the Kansas City Roller Warriors. Last summer a group of Mad Rollin’ Dolls and Kansas City skaters joined forces, winning the Rollercon 2005 scavenger hunt. Today those friendships were set aside as soon as the whistle blew. The Dairyland Dolls jumped out to an early lead behind strong jams by Mouse and Dolly Pardon Me, but the KC Roller Warriors came storming back, closing the gap to 27-25 halfway through the period. The DDs came on strong with some punishing hits by Hacksaw and Lizzie Borden, knocking the KC jammers into the boards. The final three jams saw the DD jammers pull away while the defense kept Kansas City off the scoreboard. Final score 41-28.

In the most anticipated match of Pool 1, the Dairyland Dolls finally faced the Texecutioners. Having missed out on the opportunity to play each other in the Dust Devil earlier this year, both teams were ready to rumble. The Dairyland Dolls came out on fire, taking a 7-4 lead after the first two jams. That was about it until late in the period, since the Texecutioners put down the hammer defensively and squeezed out a handful of points each jam, taking a 28-8 lead with a few minutes left in the game. The Dairyland Dolls fought back at the end, but the contest was already decided. When the final whistle blew, the Texecutioners showed everyone why they are the defending champions, winning 37-12.

In their third bout, the Dairyland Dolls took on the Boston Stranglers. Boston just came off a 42-18 loss to the Kansas City Roller Warriors and were looking to bounce back against the Dolls, but it was not meant to be. Right from the start the Dairyland Dolls’ blockers kept the Boston jammers under control, while Mouse, Dolly Pardon Me and Pocahotass racked up the points. Leaving no doubt about their claim to the grudge match later tonight, the Dairyland Dolls snuffed out the Boston Stranglers 47-8.

Right now Kansas City is playing Texas and has to win by over 20 points for us to get knocked out of the grudge match. Won't happen.

Pool 2 updates later tonight with Grudge Match and Championship results to follow.

this is not your flight to bismark

It's Saturday morning and I'm just checking the connection before meeting everyone for breakfast. As we landed in Minneapolis, the flight attendant announced that because of unexpected circumstances, this was not the flight to Bismark and everyone would have to exit the plane. The trip out to Seattle wasn't too bad, but as soon as Betty Bloodlust and I found our seats in the back row, two kids started screaming and crying nearby. All I could think was "this is not your flight to Bismark." Unfortunately, airline service just isn't what it used to be. On a four hour flight they had water and orange juice for free and you could by a snack for $2. For those of you who know about the trip to New York last summer, you understand when I say at least we didn't take Amtrak...

The action gets started in about 4 hours. I don't know if there's a connection at the arena, so I'll do my best to keep things updated. We play Kansas City and Texas back to back and then get a short break before taking on the BAD Girls. I'm hoping to post results while the other pool skates.

The Duck Pond roster

Yankee T-Bone Rose
Vaudeville Vixens, Number 1865
2006 Vixens Co-Captain
This girl knows her way around the track. type='text'>Day three

OK, another day gone and this time, no cheese in anyone's pants. That's a relief! We're down to just a few hours before the bout actually starts, and we're gettin' fired up! Had a nice dinner with the enemy, well the, opponent - The Hotrod Honeys. We skated the rink last night, got used to the venue, and now we're ready rock out with our....skates on! Baam just found a new career, as a hair stylist! He's shaved my mohawk AND shaved a crescent moon and stars into the side of my head. So much for gainful employment.

Well, it's time to get over-caffeinated, a little food in the stomach, and get to the rink! Who loves double Ds baby? Hopefully, we can recap in the morning!

Bob Noxious

Greetings Y'all!

Hey everyone,

Bob and Baam are your default reporters for this weekend so far. Because the girls chose us to be? HELL NO! Because we can't find them. Ditched us at the airport. DAMMIT!

We got here safe, sound, and, we think, with everyone and everything. Austin held a pep rally last night at Wahoo's Fish Tacos, this great bar and restaurant downtown Austin. The Texas girls, Dolls, and Carolina teams all represented. There was some good natured "jabs," crazy games, and bad ass karaoke with the live band Karaoke Apocalypse.

IMPORTANT - Ask Mouse and Paine how they ended up with dairy product - both cheese and milk - in their pants, bras, everywhere! Let's just say the cheese-eating contest went awry. Eight Track and Pixie Tourrette are sportin' a little newly acquired "fromunda" cheese themselves, as they were part of the fracas.

So far, we've learned this...you can get tacos with fish in it, tourists gather at dusk every night to watch hundreds of thousands of bats fly out from a freakin' bridge, and it's hot most of the time. But, it's a dry heat. Like that matters? DAMMIT!

Keep us in your thoughts - we scope out the rink tonight. Hopefully, we get you an update tomorrow before the bout!

Love, peace, and wheel grease,

Baam and Bob

#8 Scabs

<i style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Geneva, Helvetica, sans-serif; Eventually, we made our way back to Bladeworld to see the Texas Rollergirls' Texecutioners take on Arizona Roller Derby's Tent City Terrors. It was clear from the beginning that our rivals from Arizona were in for a rough time. Jam after jam, the Texas skaters flew through the pack while their blockers were immovable. Despite putting up a good fight, it just wasn't enough and the Texecutioners moved on to the championship bout.

Next up was the Tucson Roller Derby's Saddletramps against the Minnesota Rollergirls. It was a bruising affair, filled with devastating blocks and penalties galore. Fair or not, the Minnesota team has gotten a reputation for dirty play, but both teams laid down some wicked hits in this contest. Despite the physical nature of this bout, the result was never really in doubt as the Saddletramp's speed and experience made all the difference.

The third place bout was the consolation prize for the Tent City Terrors and Minnesota Rollergirls. Both teams had played already and Minnesota only had an hour between bouts, so neither team had a set of fresh legs to spare. Even so, they came out swinging and took an early lead. It was another physical game as the penalties kept piling up as fast as the refs could blow the whistle and there were at least two ejections. It's hard to say if Minnesota ran out of steam or the Tent City Terrors simply out skated them, but by the end of the first period, Arizona took the lead and never looked back. When the dust settled the Tent City Terrors walked (or limped) away with third place.

In the battle everyone anticipated since this tournament was announced, the Texecutioners faced off against the Saddletramps for the first ever flat track derby championship. These teams have played each other before with Texas winning all previous bouts. From the start this was a great game with skill, speed and power going head to head in a winner-takes-all showdown. The first few jams went back and forth, with no team gaining a clear advantage. At some point in the first period, Texas started to take control of the bout with outstanding jams and rock solid defense. The Saddletramps, who seemed unstoppable against other leagues, were just one step behind the Texecutioners all night. On the strength of a 114-81 victory, the Texas Rollergirls claimed the Dust Devil Tournament national championship. The Tucson skaters can take consolation in the fact that this was the closest they ever came to beating Texas.

Quarterfinal results!

The quarterfinal match between the Dairyland Dolls and Tucson Roller Derby's Saddletramps was filled to capacity. The crowd had just seen an intense battle between Minnesota and Kansas City, so the air was electric as the home team skated onto the rink. In fact, the crowd was so hostile the Minnesota skaters had to be escorted off the rink by security.

The first period was filled with intense, hard hitting action and lots of penalties. The Dairyland Dolls started and ended the period strong with jams by Crackerjack and Dolly Pardon Me. In between the score went back and forth every jam. The crowd was very much in support of the Saddletramps and downright hostile to the Dairyland Dolls. Riding the home town wave, Tucson went into the locker room with a 26-23 lead over the Dolls.

The second period was a hard one for the Dairyland Dolls as strong jamming by Tucson's Flo on the Range and Fisti the Kid built on their lead. None of the Dairyland Dolls jammers had a lot of success, due mostly to the Saddletramps' speed and experience. The Tucson skaters were able to catch up to the Dolls on the corners, making it difficult to escape the pack. In one of the most bizarre moments of the tournament, the period ended on a jam with no jammers. Both team's jammers were called out on penalties before the jam started and, amazingly, the refs decided to make the pack skate it out anyway. On the bright side, this gave the blockers a chance to get to know each other pretty well. When it was over the Dairyland Dolls were behind 58-31.

The frustrations continued for most of the third period, but near the end the Dolls' jammers found a little daylight with Jewels of Denile and Crackerjack picking up critical points. Unfortunately it seemed like the Tucson jammers were able to stay on their feet when hit, which proved to be the difference. Even though the Dairyland Dolls hope for a national championship ended with their 82-52 defeat, they gained valuable experience and hope to come back strong next year.

Saturday February 25

In the second round the Dairyland Dolls faced a familiar foe in the Gotham Girls. Having lost to the visiting Dolls in the first flat track interleague bout East of the Mississippi back in August, the Gotham Girls had a score to settle. The first period started off with a pair of penalties called on Gotham jammers, leaving their team without a way to score. The Dairyland Dolls took advantage and ran out to an early lead behind the strong skating of Mouse and Jewels of Denile. The Gotham Girls learned a lot since the last time these teams met and came out with some fierce hitting by Surly Temple and Ginger Snap, but their intensity was matched by the likes of Lizzie Borden, Scabs and Peter Pannies, who gave Crackerjack a whip so hard she went airborne. At the end of the first period, the Dairyland Dolls doubled up the Gotham Girls, 54-27.

There was no letup in the second period, with both teams slamming bodies into each other and penalties called early and often. The Gotham Girls fought hard, but the Dairyland Dolls just kept coming. With the game under control, there was time to work on a little bit of strategy. Twice in the second period the Dolls passed the star, which is when the jammer passes her helmet cover to the pivot, who then becomes the jammer. This is something the Dairyland Dolls have not done before, but may need it in future bouts. Throughout the bout, it became clear the refs had trouble communicating with each other and the skates. There were far too many jams delayed trying to figure out who should sit in the penalty box.

Both teams seemed to wear down a bit in the third period, but still kept up the pressure. For some reason, the refs called a lot of penalties on jammers leading to some interesting strategies by both teams. With Rippin Kitten in the penalty box, the Gotham Girls tried to speed up the pack and the Dairyland Dolls refused to go with. Because the Gotham Girls were too far ahead of the pack they couldn't touch our jammer and she sailed through for four points. In another display of skill and athletic ability, Mouse rode around the corner on one skate to get around Emma Badapple and Donna Matrix. In the end, the Dairyland Dolls advanced to the quarterfinals with a 142-70 beating of the Gotham Girls.

Later tonight the Dairyland Dolls will battle the more experienced Tuscson Roller Derby team for a place in the Semifinals. Updates will follow.

second round matchups

Friday some time past midnight

Late tonight the final pool finished play with some drama. During a hard fought bout between Tucson and Rat City, Tombstone Teri was knocked off the track by a Rat City skater and slid into the boards. She was obviously hurt and the paramedics were called over. After putting her in a neck brace, a folding table was used as a stretcher. It was at that point I discovered that the paramedics were just volunteers, not actual EMTs and they didn't have an ambulance on site. In a tournament of this scale, 20 teams bouting nonstop for almost 3 full days, it seems like they should have had at least one ambulance on hand for just such an event.

When the Rattlesnake pool was settled, Tucson took first at 4-0, followed by Rat City at 3-1 and Providence the third team at 2-2. With all the preliminaries out of the way the seedings were set for round two.

1. Texas
2. Tucson
3. Minnesota
4. Arizona
5. Each of the four pools had five teams, the top three moving on to the next round of the tournament. The Texas Rollergirls took first place in the Scorpion pool at 4-0, including a 70-1 drubbing of the Atlanta Rollergirls. Second place went to the Kansas City Roller Warriors who edged out the Gotham Girls 26-24. These three teams live to fight another day while Atlanta and Duke City become spectators tomorrow.

The Tarantula pool included our very own Dairyland Dolls. In their first bout of the day, the Dolls lined up against their good friends, the Windy City Rollers. These two teams have a bond that goes back to when the girls from Chicago rented a coach bus to cheer on the Mad Rollin' Dolls in their very first exhibition bout a year and a half ago. The Dairyland Dolls came out hard and fast behind a pair of 10 point jams from Crackerjack. Alternating jams with Jewels of Denile, the Dolls kept racking up points. They say defense wins championships, which is a good thing because the Dairyland Dolls pitched a shutout. Scabs, Princess Die, Peter Pannies and other blockers built a wall that never came down. In the end the Dolls skated away with a 42-0 victory.

In their second match, the Dairyland Dolls took on the Bay Area Derby (BAD) Girls. In a tougher match up than expected the two teams went back and forth, with Dolly Pardon Me, HackSAW and Pocahotass taking turns jamming. The game was tight for the first few jams, but with strong skating by Mouse and Jewels of Denile the Dolls pulled ahead and never looked back. A final score of 27-14 put the Dolls at 2-0 in their pool, setting up a battle of titans with Arizona Roller Derby.

On a snowy day in early December, Arizona Roller Derby sent their all star team, the Tent City Terrors to Madison. In a brutal marathon of a bout, the Mad Rollin' Dolls fell just short. Nearly three months later the Dairyland Dolls had another shot at their rivals in the Tarantula pool. Both teams came out hitting hard and the blockers definitely controlled the game. Outstanding plays by TCT's Denise Lightning and DD's like Scabs, Paine Mansfield and Vanna Whitetrash kept the scoring to a minimum. It took three jams before the scoreboard moved at all, but skillful jamming by the Arizona skaters gave them the first lead of the match. Mouse, Jewels and Crackerjack brought the Dolls to within two points going into the last jam, but the defenses of both teams held. In one of the most riveting bouts of the day, the Dairyland Dolls fell to the Tent City Terrors by a final score of 7-5.

With a place in the next round virtually assures, the Dairyland Dolls needed a win to give them second place in their pool and a more favorable match up in the morning. The Dallas Derby Devils, with only one win still had a shot at playing tomorrow, but the Dairyland Dolls would have none of it. The Dairyland Dolls scored early and often and solid play by Lizzie Borden and Ilse Von Blutsterne kept the Dallas jammers in check. Point differential will be used to break ties in seeding the next round, so the Dairyland Dolls really helped themselves by posting a 37-11 victory and a 3-1 record in the first round.

The last bout of the Tarantula pool was a bit of a shocker when the BAD Girls came out on fire against the Tent City Terrors and took a three point lead going into the last two minutes. Skill and experience came in handy and the Arizona skaters managed to tie it up going into the last jam. The final minute was a defensive battle with no jammer having an advantage and, in a nail biter, the two teams tied at 25.

The Black Widow pool saw the Minnesota Rollergirls come out on top with a 4-0 record followed by their rival the Carolina Rollergirls. The two teams split their previous bouts with each other, with the home team winning on both occasions. The rubber match went to our neighbors to the north. Carolina took second place with a 3-1 record and exactly the same point differential as the Dairyland Dolls. The tiebreaker will be a coin flip to see which team will be seeded higher in the next round. Hard Knocks, the Houston Roller Derby team took third place in the pool with a 2-2 record. Sin City and Assassination City have a little more time to drink beer and watch other teams skate.

The Rattlesnake pool just started and an update may have to wait until tomorrow when the second round seedings are set and the Dairyland Dolls take another step toward a championship.

Traveling Women

Today, the Dairyland Dolls head off to Tucson to kick some Dust Devil Derriere!
